This chapbook brings together twelve poems responding to the subject of war, with emphasis on war in Ukraine. Created for The Waste Land Project, an initiative by Theater of War in collaboration with the Toronto International Festival of Authors (Canada), Bristol Ideas (UK), and Aké Arts and Books Festival (Nigeria), the poems were inspired by T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land on its 100th anniversary. Three poets from the original Waste Land Project and three from Ukraine each contributed two poems, which were presented in 2022 during a worldwide online reading and discussion. Together, the poems reflect on Eliot’s work and on contemporary issues, highlighting its ongoing resonance in today’s world.

Authors’ Bios
Dr. Madhur Anand is the author of the experimental memoir This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart, which won Canada’s 2020 Governor General’s Award for nonfiction, the poetry collections A New Index for Predicting Catastrophes (2015) and Parasitic Oscillations (2022), and other literary works published in national and international literary magazines. She is a professor of ecology and sustainability at the University of Guelph, where she was appointed the inaugural Director of the Guelph Institute for Environmental Research.
Alex Averbuch is a poet, translator, and scholar. He is the author of three books of poetry and an array of literary translations between Hebrew, Ukrainian, English, and Russian. His English- language publications have appeared in, or are forthcoming from, the Manhattan Review (Pushcart nominated), Copper Nickel, Plume, Birmingham Poetry Review, Words Without Borders, and Common Knowledge. His latest book Zhydivs’kyi korol’ (The Jewish King; English trans., Lost Horse Press, 2024) was a finalist for the Shevchenko National Prize, Ukraine’s highest cultural award. Averbuch is active in promoting Ukrainian-Jewish relations. He has translated into Hebrew and published over thirty selections of poetry by contemporary Ukrainian poets. Currently he is compiling and editing an anthology of contemporary Ukrainian poetry in Hebrew translation.
Erin Robinsong is a poet and interdisciplinary artist working with ecological imagination. She is the author of Wet Dream (Brick Books, 2022), and Rag Cosmology (Book*hug, 2017), which won the AM Klein Prize for Poetry, and several chapbooks including Liquidity (House House Press, 2020). Collaborative performance works with Andréa de Keijzer and Hanna Sybille Müller include This ritual is not an accident, Facing away from that which is coming, and Polymorphic Microbe Bodies. Originally from Cortes Island, Erin lives in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal.
A. F. Moritz’s most recent books of poems are The Garden (2021), As Far As You Know (2020), and The Sparrow: Selected Poems (2018). His work has received the Griffin Poetry Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, Award in Literature of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, selection to the Princeton Series of Contemporary Poets, and other recognitions. Three of his books have been finalists for the Governor General’s Award in poetry.
Halyna Kruk is a poet, translator, professor of medieval literature at Lviv State University, and former vice president of PEN Ukraine. She has been recognized as a significant voice in Ukrainian poetry since her twenties; her first two collections of poetry, Journeys in Search of Home and Footprints on Sand, were published in 1997. She has published five volumes of poetry, two volumes of prose fiction, and children’s fiction that has been translated into fifteen languages. She has won numerous Ukrainian and European awards for her writing.
Iryna Shuvalova is a poet, scholar, and translator from Kyiv, Ukraine, based in Nanjing, China. She is the author of four award-winning books of poetry in Ukrainian and of the bilingual Pray to the Empty Wells (Lost Horse Press, 2019). Her latest collection, StoneOrchardWoods (2020), was named poetry book of the year in Ukraine, and her new book The Ending Songs was published in 2023. Her work has been translated into 23 languages.
