WHAT IT IS
It’s the sky in your mouth
a Saskatchewan summer
s t r e t c h e d
pulled taut across infinity
back to some faceless city
where you hear voices in the walls
more than one victim in hiding
down the hall, an injured bird
squawking
helpless
then held up
to the sky
for all to behold
her peppercorn heart
beating
still beating
against
all odds
