String Practice

String Quartet

What was it that you heard
half a century ago, transfixed there
at the top of the stairs, the evening
pink above the suburban rooftops, the radio
left playing by the homework
on your desk? How did you know,
you who knew nothing
of Europe, or deafness, or love,
that someone finally was telling the truth?
